Refrigeration U: What Is A Screed?

To some folks, a screed might sound like a Star Wars villain. However, if you are installing a walk-in, a screed can be your best friend.

Most screeds are U-shaped vinyl channels that fit onto the bottom of a walk-in panel forming a seal against outside air and moisture. Screeds also hold in cold air and increase a walk-in’s performance and energy efficiency. They are essential if you have a floorless walk-in.

Most screeds are U-shaped vinyl channels that fit onto the bottom of a walk-in panel.

Other types of screeds include foam sealers which are constructed like a walk-in panel. Wall panels sit on top of foam sealers and cam-lock to them. To hold the foam sealers in place, plywood foam sealer guides are installed on the floor underneath.

Screeds also help align walk-in panels during construction. Once place on a concrete floor, they form a track to guide the placement of panels.

When installing screeds, remember that your floor must be level for a proper seal. Also, make sure the screed is square by confirming that the two dimensions between opposite corners are equal. For more information on the screed installation process, see our walk-in installation manual beginning on page 14.
